SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Beat by beat, one Latin American drum circle is hoping to bring the spirit of community back to Skiddy Park.
“I’ve been here since 1974. This is the park I played football, baseball… it’s kind of sad, that’s why I want to bring back the community to hear us and join us,” said Musician Henry Gonzalez Rosado.
He says recent shootings in the area have been disappointing, but that won’t stop the band from making noise.
“At first, I was kind of nervous, but people seem like they’re enjoying it,” said Rosado.
The group is playing tunes throughout the summer on Sundays. Onlookers say it’s drumming up positivity.
“They’ve got to have more stuff like this… it gives people something to do,” said John Schultz.
“The community’s got to get healthy again and feel the support that is this,” said Ryland Heagerty.
Whether you live in the neighborhood or are just stopping by the drummers say it’s all about one thing.
“Having fun… this was a fun park and I want to bring it back,” said Rosado.
